Lil Nas X has revealed he took magic mushrooms for the first time while writing his debut album Montero.

The American rapper took the psychedelic drug in order to "open up" and get more "creative."

According to reports, the 'Old Town Road' rapper produced most of his album in Airbnbs alongside Denzel Baptiste and David Biral - aka Take a Daytrip. One day, he took the magic mushrooms and just sat by the pool, reflecting on life and allowing the creative juices to get flowing. This was his breakthrough moment, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"I was able to open up a lot," the 22-year-old told the publication. "I was able to write actual stories about my life and put it into my music. I actually did that for the first time."

He added that his experience with drugs while putting together his 2021 album helped him to "push past lots of lingering feelings of self-consciousness."

Montero is Lil Nas X's first album and it's very autobiographical, dealing with a lot of Lil Nas X's own experiences, including heartbreak, isolation and even suicide.

His track 'Dead Right Now' reportedly deals with Lil Nas X's father not having any faith in him making it in the music industry. Despite these worries though, Lil Nas X's father is one of his biggest supporters and recently backed him up after another rapper, Boosie Badazz, made homophobic comments towards Lil Nas X online.

Lil Nas X is now one of the most-streamed artists in the world, according to WSJ, and he's already won several awards for his music (not to mention making a fortune). In November 2021, he was handed a Wall Street Journal Magazine Innovator award, alongside the likes of Kim Kardashian, Lewis Hamilton and Ryan Reynolds.

In 2019, he became the first black openly gay artist to receive a Country Music Award for 'Old Town Road' with Billy Ray Cyrus. Speaking of country music, Dolly Parton has become one of Lil Nas X's latest fans after he performed a cover of her hit track 'Jolene' on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge.

In October 2021, his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, even gave him a national day to commemorate his achievements.
