The idyllic seaside town of Portorosso along the Italian Riviera is the setting for Disney Pixar's latest animated film, where we follow the fun-filled adventures of a young boy called Luca and his newfound best friend.

But these two aren't ordinary boys, they're sea monsters from another world just below the surface. After Luca's friend shows him how much fun life can be on land, their utopian bubble of gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides gets threatened.

"This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it's set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship," said Enrico Casarosa, the film's Academy Award-winning director.

"Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca."

"So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca."

So with much of Europe, including Italy, on the UK government's amber list for travel, watching Luca could provide us with some much needed escapism to the Italian Riviera.

Here's everything you need to know about watching the new film.

Luca release date

Luca comes to our screens on 18th June 2021, making it a great Friday night movie to sit down and enjoy. You can stream it online at Disney+.

Here's a reminder of the trailer.

Luca 2021 official soundtrack

No official soundtrack has been confirmed yet, but composer and musician, Fyrosand, published 'LUCA' on their Youtube channel and says it's the main theme.

The song in the official trailer is a fun little Italian tune called 'il Gatto E La Volpe' by Edoardo Bennato.
