The Guilty is the hot new thriller on Netflix everybody's been talking about recently and fans want to know if it's based on a true story. Well, sort of.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this gripping crime thriller which tells the story of a troubled police detective Joe Bayler, who's been demoted to 911 operator duty and ends up on one his most hair-raising cases yet.

He's about to hang up on a woman who he thinks has just called 911 to "talk to somebody," but when it becomes clear that she's been abducted, he ends up scrambling to save her life. With just a white van to go on in terms of descriptions, Bayler has to try and track down the victim before it's too late. But there's more to this case than meets the eye.

The 90-minute movie was first released on Netflix on 24th September and crime fans have been on the edge of their seats.

Is The Guilty based on a true story?

While there's no doubt that situations like this do happen in emergency call centres, The Guilty is not based on a true story per se.

It is, however, a remake of the Danish film of the same name (Den Skyldige), which was released in October 2018 and is based on real-life events. The original was reportedly inspired by a real emergency call which the film's director Gustav Möller observed. So in a round-about way, you could say The Guilty is based on a true story as it follows the narrative of the original Danish version so closely.
