Avril Lavigne has excited fans with a new project involving her 2002 hit single, 'Sk8r Boi'.
The singer was just 16 years old when she released her first album, Let Go, featuring the iconic pop-punk track.
Now, during the song’s 20th anniversary, Lavigne is hoping to mark the occasion by adapting the lyrics into a film.

Speaking on iHeartRadio’s podcast, She Is The Voice, she said: “Recently with it being almost the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, so it keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me.
“And so, I’m actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level.”
When asked what inspired the song all those years ago, the 37-year-old replied: “You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there’s like skaters, preps and jocks.”

Expanding on this, she said: “It’s kind of like a missed opportunity at love.
“The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s too cool for him but then five years from now she’s feeding the baby and she’s all alone and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations.”
Of course, fans revelled in the nostalgic news.
One social media user wrote: “Please do! Anything for an escape to a time when life was... way better! I mean life is good but not the same as when we were growing up for the kids of today.”

Another recalled the infamous lyrics: “He was a boy, she was a girl... Could I make it anymore obvious?!”
However, not everyone was feeling the love as one user simply wrote: “No thank you.”
Another joked: “There’s not enough material in that song to make a pilot for a failed lifetime sitcom.”

A third eagle-eyed user noticed this was an old story, ‘like 2003 story’.
It seems they were right as, back in 2003, Paramount Pictures were set to transform the hit single into a movie, although this never materialised.
This is not Lavigne’s first trip down memory lane this year, as back in June she joined forces with skateboarding legend, Tony Hawk, to make her TikTok debut.
In the video, Lavigne could be seen lip-syncing to 'Sk8er Boi' before the camera cut to Hawk, 53, who smiles to viewers as he poses at the top of the ramp - now wearing Lavigne's tie - before smoothly dropping down to bust out a few tricks.
