My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding's Paddy Doherty has tested positive for coronavirus and is currently in hospital being treated for double pneumonia, his family have confirmed.

The 61-year-old star, who is also known for winning Celebrity Big Brother, has had to be put on oxygen as his body battles the deadly virus.

His wife Roseanne Doherty wrote on Facebook: "Please will [everyone] pray for my Paddy he has been taken into hospital. He is not very well."

In another update, she wrote: "Paddy has tested positive for Covid-19 please keep praying for him."

Doherty's son Simey also posted a message on Facebook to say his father has double pneumonia.

He said: "Can everybody please keep my father in prayer as I was just speaking to him and he has got double pneumonia.

"Also claw seen in the lungs and tested positive for Covid. He's also on oxygen. Keep my father in prayer."

A former bare-knuckle boxer, Doherty rose to fame after starred in Channel 4 documentary My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

He then featured in Celebrity Big Brother in 2011, winning the series, before appearing in two-part progamme When Paddy Met Sally, which saw his CBB housemate Sally Bercow move into his chalet on a travellers' site.

After his CBB triumph, Doherty said he was surprised to have done so well, and was happy it helped people find out more about travellers and their community.

He told Digital Spy at the time: "I swear to God, as true as my wife, I haven't got a clue how I won.

"We're travellers. I went in to Big Brother, and I swear to God I thought I'd be in there a week. One week, I'd last a week, and lovely jubbly - I'm in, I'm out.

"I don't know how I won. How do you win something when you've been yourself?

"Not false. I had no game plan - I'm a sausage! Either people like me or they don't like me."

Of fellow contestant Bercow, he added: "Honest to God, I've got to say about her she is the loveliest woman - I wouldn't say on the planet, because I don't know everyone.

"We were chalk and cheese, we were the opposite of each other, but I loved the way she talked. You listen to me, my rough voice, but the way she talked and pronounced her words - gorgeous.

"But she'd always jump in the deep end without thinking. I became her probation officer, her community service, you know what I mean?

"She's a diamond of all diamonds - she's a lovely lady, a beautiful, beautiful lady."
