He played Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, won Best Actor at the Golden Globes for his role as PS David Budd in BBC drama Bodyguard and today Richard Madden was honoured for his contribution to drama

The 33-year-old actor picked up his honorary doctorate at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland - where he graduated in 2007.

He is currently starring in a cinema biopic of Elton John, Rocketman, and will appear in Steven Spielberg's World War One drama, 1917, which has begun filming in Glasgow.

Madden beamed ecstatically as he stood on the steps with 300 graduates of the prestigious college, along with lighting designer Paule Constable and soprano Margaret Marshall OBE, who also received honorary degrees.

According to the Daily Record, he spoke at the ceremony, saying: "The Conservatoire gave me the confidence to call myself an actor. It gave me a place to study my craft and go out in the word to be what I want to be."

He added humbly that he continued to consider himself an actor in training and joked: "Except now you have to call me doctor."

In the speech he also referenced the fact that he missed his actual graduation because he was 'fortunate enough to be working' adding: "So it feels particularly special to be here today - it feels like I'm finally graduating, albeit 12 years late."

Madden addressed the audience at the event.

He went on: "That's why coming back here now is such an honour for me, this journey started, it led me to being here today and it started back here and I'll be forever thankful and grateful and proud that I studied here.

"I'm even more proud and humbled that this place that gave me so much continues to support me and I'm truly honoured to receive this accolade today."

Professor Jeffrey Sharkey, Principal of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, said: "Graduation is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate inspirational individuals who have made deep and lasting contributions to the world through the arts.

"Richard, Paule and Margaret have all demonstrated an exceptional ability to inspire and engage audiences through their artistry and we are delighted to be able to honour them while we celebrate our students' achievements on their special occasion here at Scotland's national conservatoire."

Congrats, Richard.
