There's a lot of speculation they're going to have an on-screen reunion on Law & Order.

Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay from Law & Order: SVU have had a little reunion during lockdown in America.

It's been years since we've seen these two together and the photo uploaded onto social media has sent fans into meltdown.

They played Detectives Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson on the crime drama for years before Meloni left in 2011. Margitay has since gone on to become Captain of the Special Victims Unit.

The caption for the photo was simply titled "It's on."

That's led to many people speculating that their much rumoured reunion on SVU is imminent.

Meloni is coming back to the Law & Order franchise in September with his own show Organized Crime. The actor has teased that there could be a reunion between Benson and Stabler on that show.

Speaking to the NY Post, Meloni said: "It just has to be. Benson and Stabler are inextricably linked, locked and connected.

"How my character left was really unsatisfying, I think."

Stabler left the Special Victims Unit under the guise that he was retiring from the force. His final episode, titled 'Smoked', was a doozy as well, which left the squad room in tatters.

Clearly something is brewing in New York's organised crime; something big enough to bring Detective Stabler out of retirement and onto our screens.

The format could be very different to previous Law & Order series and plot lines could be drawn out over several episodes rather than the crime, investigation and criminal trial all happening in one.

The network has unveiled the official synopsis for the programme and it sounds incredible.

"The city and police department have changed dramatically in the decade he's been away, and he must adapt to a criminal justice system in the midst of its own moment of reckoning," the synopsis says.

NBC

"Throughout the series, we will follow Stabler's journey to find absolution and rebuild his life, while leading a new elite task force that is taking apart the city's most powerful criminal syndicates one by one."

To be honest, the show could just be about Stabler getting coffee with his on-screen bestie Olivia Benson and we'd still be thrilled.

Meloni is promising that his character's departure from SVU will be explored in Organised Crime.

He added: "I think there is truly and deeply a worthwhile, inherent drama in exploring that relationship and the complexity of how Stabler left - the unresolved emotions both characters feel and how the fans feel."

Sadly, production on the show has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, however it's scheduled to premiere in the Fall schedule straight after new SVU episodes.
