Conor McGregor Given Key To City Where He Was Arrested For Robbery

Conor McGregor has been given a key to the city of Miami where he was once arrested for allegedly smashing a fan's phone at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel.

The 33-year-old former UFC champion shared images of himself, his fiancée Dee Devlin, and his children with the Mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez.

Sharing a series of pictures on Instagram, he wrote: "The Mac with The Key to The City of Miami! Thank you Mayor Suarez for bestowing this great honour upon me and with my family present to witness.

"A very proud moment for me in my life. Thank you! Your hospitality and care for my family and team will be forever remembered. God Bless you and this great city! May the spirit of Miami live within us all."

If you're not familiar with the handing over of a key, as many people on social media seem to be confused with (we were, too), it's basically a tradition that shows trust and honour in a person.

Of course, it's not actually a functioning key and doesn't open some huge gate to get into Miami (at least we don't think it does).

According to Brown University, the key symbolizes the freedom of the recipient to enter and leave the city at will, as a trusted friend of city residents.

It's presented to esteemed visitors, residents, or others the city wishes to honour... Such as Conor.

Of course, some people didn't agree that Conor should be given a key, with one writing: "Sure let's give this felon the key to the city. What a joke."

Another asked: "Why Miami? He's never competed in Florida, let alone Miami. He's not from Miami. What has he done for that city to deserve the key? It makes no sense."

And a third pointed out: "Isn't this the scene of that phone theft incident that landed him in some legal trouble?"

However, others weren't so negative, with one commending him: "Now this I like. No crazy s**t. Just you being appreciative and humble like a human being. It's not too late for you. Stay on this track man."

Someone else said: "This is just beautiful. He takes pride in everything he achieves. Even the smallest things in life mean the world to him. God bless u Conor."
