Macaulay Culkin took to Reddit yesterday for an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session, during which he spilled a few home truths about his roles, his personal life and his thoughts on US president Donald Trump.

The 37-year-old (yeah, really) told fans on the site that the first Home Alone movie - the 1990 film which catapulted him to stardom - was his favourite of the franchise to work on, not least because it contained '100 percent less Trump'.

The former actor was referring to Donald Trump's fleeting cameo in Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, where young Kevin McAllister (played by Culkin) briefly bumps into the business tycoon and future world leader in the foyer of the Plaza Hotel.

But Culkin played down his scene with the man who would later become the US President.

"I mean, the guy made like a half a second cameo," he said. "I wouldn't be surprised if that's how long he was literally on set for."

Trump's appearance in the movie never made a great deal of sense, but it did have its reasons.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, actor Matt Damon revealed that writing Trump a cameo was essential if you wanted to shoot a scene on his property.

The Trump scenes are usually just shot to appease him and then cut out before the final edit, but in Home Alone 2's case, it was left in for some reason.

"[Director] Martin Brest had to write something in Scent of a Woman - and the whole crew was in on it," Damon explained.

"You have to waste an hour of your day with a bullshit shot: Donald Trump walks in and Al Pacino's like, 'Hello, Mr. Trump!' - you had to call him by name - and then he exits. You waste a little time so that you can get the permit, and then you can cut the scene out. But I guess in Home Alone 2 they left it in."

Back on the Reddit AMA, Culkin also took time to answer questions about his drug use - a subject that has seen him plastered over newspapers for many years - saying that it was never anywhere near as bad as anybody made it out to be.

"Yes, I consumed and imbibed in drugs in my life. Never as bad as people said," he explained.

He added: "It's not really a thing in my life right now. I'm an adult. I like to drink."

Culkin says he has no plans to return to the screen anytime soon and for now is focussed on his Bunny Ears podcast and website of the same name.
