In a post on its official Twitter account Marvel Entertainment thanked fans for being the 'best in the universe'.

The announcement comes after days of hints from directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who shared an image of the number three yesterday and a two today, on their Instagram.

The plot details have been kept under wraps - however, we know that a bunch of heroes from across the Marvel universe will be joining forces to take on Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) as he attempts to collect all the Infinity Stones to destroy everything.

We also know that Iron Man (Robert Downey Jnr), Captain American (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and our pals from Guardians of the Galaxy are all on board - so it's bound to be fucking amazing.

Avengers: Infinity War will be followed by the as-yet-untitled fourth Avengers movie, which is said to be the last film in the series.

Due out in 2019, the fourth movie will be the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, according to a Marvel chief, will see some heroes donning their costumes for the final time.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Marvel Studios' president Kevin Feige teased that the as-yet-untitled third Avengers sequel will "bring things you've never seen in superhero films: a finale."

He continued: "There will be two distinct periods. Everything before Avengers 4 and everything after. I know it will not be in ways people are expecting."

The fourth Avengers movie will signal the end of many of the star's contracts, including Hemsworth, Johansson, Evans and Downey Jnr, Entertainment Weekly reports.

But Marvel fans don't need to cry just yet, because MCU has movies planned up to 2020 and Feige told Vanity Fair that they are planning new films that will be 'completely different from anything that's came before'.

And until then, we've got two more Avengers movies to look forward to.
