Gwyneth Paltrow Jokes She Was High On Mushrooms When She Came Up With Her Vagina Candle

Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed where the inspiration came from for her vagina-scented candle, joking that she was on mushrooms when she dreamt up the idea.

If you need bringing up to speed on what the hell is going on, Paltrow's Goop website has been selling candles that smell like the star's vagina.

It's a pretty bizarre concept, and is one that apparently all began as a bit of a laugh between 47-year-old Paltrow and perfumer Douglas Little.

Speaking on US chat show Late Night With Seth Meyers, Paltrow revealed: "So it sort of started as a joke.

"I was with Douglas Little for his brand Heretic, and we were kind of messing around and I smelled this beautiful thing and I was like, 'This smells like my vagina'.

"And I was kidding, obviously."

Despite the fact she was just messing around, the two decided to go with it.

"We were on mushrooms," Paltrow joked, before quickly adding: "No, we weren't!"

She continued: "But then it actually became kind of a funny thing, where it was really funny to us but also a little bit punk rock.

"I think women, a lot of us have grown up feeling certain degrees of shame or whatever around our bodies or whatever, so this is just a little bit of a subversive candle for all of us out there."

The Goop website also explains how the actor had blurted out 'Uhhh, this smells like a vagina,' as she and Little worked on the fragrance - and that this then evolved into a 'funny, gorgeous, sexy, and beautifully unexpected scent'.

The duo didn't end up producing this into a fragrance, but decided instead to bring it to life in a candle.

So, what does vagina smell like I hear you ask? Well, according to Paltrow it's a blend of geranium, citrusy bergamot, and cedar absolutes juxtaposed with Damask rose and ambrette seed.

Certainly gives Yankee Candle a run for its money, doesn't it?

According to Goop, the candle - which was made by artisanal fragrance brand Heretic - sold out within hours of its release, as it turns out a lot of people are happy to part ways with $75 (£57) for the sake of a vagina-smelling candle.

All I can say is: each to their own.
