Darrell Ward, star of Channel 5 reality show Ice Road Truckers has tragically died in a plane crash while on the way to film a documentary about recovering plane wrecks.

Ward, 52, was headed to Missoula in Montana, US, having stopped in Dallas when his plane crashed, killing him and his co-pilot near Interstate 90 in Texas.

Father and grandfather Ward, whose famed motto was 'Any road, any load', rose to stardom on Ice Road Truckers, a docuseries showing the extreme and dangerous lives of those who have to drive cargo to remote places.

His family asked for all those who share in their loss to also respect their privacy.

"Trucking has always been a large part of Darrell's life; from running the harvest rigs with his grandparents and family, to driving trucks from Montana to Alaska and all roads in between," the statement read.

Darrell was well known for always doing what he could to help fellow truckers who'd found themselves in a difficult spot.

His daughter later posted on his Facebook page...

The last series of Ice Road Truckers saw 900,000 people watch in the UK alone.

The cause of the plane crash that killed him remains a mystery but is under investigation.

RIP Darrell Ward.
