The Kardashian clan may be one of the most successful celebrity families on the planet, but even that couldn't protect them from the merciless audience of last night's Emmy Awards - who ended up savagely laughing at them as they presented an award.

The evening honoured some of the world's finest television, with the likes of drama series Chernobyl and Killing Eve and Fleabag maestro Phoebe Waller-Bridge among the big winners of the evening.

Kim Kardashian and her sister Kendall Jenner were also around to help pay homage to the silver screen's finest, and came in front of the crowd to present the award for outstanding competition series.

Introducing the award, Kim said: "Our family knows firsthand how truly compelling television comes from real people just being themselves."

Sister Kendall then chipped in: "Telling their stories unfiltered and unscripted."

Real people. Just being themselves. UNSCRIPTED.

Neither of their expressions suggested there was even a shred of irony in their words, their faces completely deadpan as they recited the lines.

But as they did, many audience members couldn't resist a little snigger - something that did not go unnoticed by fans watching at home.

One person tweeted: "DID THE AUDIENCE JUST LAUGH AT KIM KARDASHIAN SAYING "Real people telling real stories about themselves" at the #Emmys?!? I truly thought I heard them laugh at her for that line. Y'all so shady."

Another said: "My Emmys highlight so far has def been the audience laughing at the Kardashian's pretending their show isn't scripted."

A third added: "The audience at The Emmy's just laughed #KimKardashian & #KendallJenner off the stage."

Many others stuck up for the sisters, saying Kendall looked 'sad', while also pointing out that they were behind a hugely popular, long-running reality series.

Emmy winner Jason Bateman was also the butt of some jokes after he was roasted by talk show hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel.

Kimmell said to the audience: "Who would sit behind a desk and pretend to be interested in Jason Bateman's vacation stories?"

But something tells us Bateman's cold stare was just a rouse, his straight expression having become one of his acting trademarks over the years.

Plus, he had a pretty good night in the end, as he won the Emmy for Outstanding Direction of a Drama Series - something that even he seemed surprised by, his shocked reaction inspiring a flurry of memes.

Bateman's acceptance speech was brief - presumably because he was still bowled over by the win - and said how lucky he is to work on the show, thanking the cast, crew and his family back at home.
