Louis Theroux has shared a sad selfie on Instagram, telling fans he's managed to cut 'a small slice' of his finger off while chopping an onion for a Jamie Oliver recipe.

Theroux was attempting to make carrot and coriander pancakes using a recipe from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, which, like many dishes, calls for a chopped onion.

The only thing is, Theroux ended up adding an extra ingredient unintentionally, having hacked off a bit of his own finger. Ouch.

Sharing his woes on Instagram, he wrote: "Cut a small slice of my finger off while chopping a red onion for a Jamie Oliver recipe for carrot and coriander pancakes. Briefly went pale and had to lie down.

"Family not impressed by my lack of stoicism. Me too frankly. Still haven't found the missing piece of finger."

In his selfie, he sadly showed off a bandaged finger to the camera.

Theroux, 49, has been doing a fair bit of cooking recently - with varying levels of success, we should add.

From lentil soup ('delicious') to shepherd's pie (a 'culinary disappointment'), he's been documenting his efforts on social media, telling fans about the ups and downs he's faced in the kitchen.

One dish he's been particularly determined to master is a vegetarian lasagne, lamenting how one involved 'a lot of trouble for something that tasted OK but no AMAZING'.

Another attempt turned out to be 'pretty disappointing given the amount of work'.

Still, at least he's also been busy with new podcast Grounded which sees him interview stars including Boy George, Lenny Henry, Gail Porter and Jon Ronson.

Speaking to LADbible recently, Theroux explained: "There's a little community of podcasters... a lot of them are stand-up comedians and stuff. A podcast village. And no disrespect to them, but I didn't want it to be that. It needs to be people who you're not likely to hear on other podcasts."

You can listen to Grounded on BBC Sounds.
