Mark Wahlberg looked very different as he was spotted out and about filming, having gained weight for a new role.

The usually ripped star has had an incredible transformation after he gained 9kg (20lbs) for his new flick Father Stu in which he plays Father Stuart Long, a former heavyweight boxer turned priest.

The 49-year-old was seen on the streets of Los Angeles with a cropped haircut and what appeared to be a prosthetic chin to give him a fuller face.

Wahlberg recently revealed he gave himself just weeks to gain the extra weight.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Wahlberg said: "After we do the boxing scenes, I get to put on as much weight as possible over the course of the film, so I'm challenging myself to put on 30 pounds in the next six weeks."

The actor also said he was happy to chow down on 'everything in sight' after spending so many years keeping himself in tip top shape.

He added: "They want me to do it as healthy as possible. I'm like, 'Dude, I've been on such a regimen for so long, I just want to eat everything in sight.'

"I want to go to bakeries, I want to go to Denny's, I want to get pancakes. I want to get everything that I could possibly get my hands on."

Wahlberg has previously showed off his transformation on Instagram, sharing a before and after photo alongside the caption: "From left photo 3 weeks ago to this, now. Thanks to @chef_lawrence_d cooking."

Personal chef Lawrence Duran told E!News Wahlberg is eating eight meals a day - around 7,000 calories - to help him gain weight and stressed that everything was carefully monitored.

He said: "We meet with a team of doctors who do his bloodwork and a nutritionist who gives us a full breakdown of what his body needs, what his body's lacking and basically come up with a meal plan accordingly.

"We do good carbohydrates, dark green vegetables, and then, just switch up the protein throughout the day and, at least, a dozen eggs a day."

He went on to say he reckons Wahlberg will be able to 'drop it pretty quick'.

He added: "Within a few weeks you'll probably see a drastic change."
