Ed Sheeran recently announced his engagement, which came as a bit of a shock to some fans as the famously low-key singer had managed to keep the details of his relationship with Cherry Seaborn pretty quiet.
However, according to the Mirror, pals of the happy couple say the engagement comes as no surprise, because Cherry was there for the 'Shape of You' singer when he hit a very low point.
Ed and Cherry first met while at school together at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham, Suffolk, where Ed had a bit of a crush on her.
But the pair went their separate ways before anything could happen, with Ed dropping out of school at 16 to pursue a career in music (good decision, mate) and Cherry flying across the Atlantic to take a place at Duke University in North Carolina, where she studied molecular biology.
Fast-forward several years and Ed had sky-rocketed to fame, with a number of award-winning albums under his belt. The fame and notoriety began to get to Ed, and in 2015 he admitted he was taking a year out - from music and social media.
In a recent interview, Ed revealed: "I stayed inside for four months. I watched movies. I couldn't just go out and get a pint of milk. I always wanted to maintain normality. I was ordering takeaways and putting on a lot of weight."
It was around this time that Ed decided to reach out to his old school pal Cherry and, while travelling around the world, paid her a visit.
The pair were then spotted out and about in the States, attending baseball games and going out for food.
Opening up about the early days of their relationship, the romantic redhead said: "This has been the first time I've ever actually had the time to fall in love properly."
Ed and Cherry then spent some time travelling the world before she moved over to the UK and took a job at an accountancy firm in London, to be nearer to her fella.
They've since moved in together, but still manage to keep their private life very private.
Speaking to BBC Radio 2, Ed said: "I'm actually the happiest I've been and it's because I had a year to spend with someone. I've always started relationships then gone off on tour.
"I spent every day for a year with this certain person, we kind of have a strong relationship now which is good.
"I'm really secure now, we live together and we have cats, and I think when you have cats that's kind of it."
He announced their engagement via social media last week and has been flooded with well-wishes from fans since.
