Adele Turns Down Million-Pound Private Gig To Look After Her Garden

With estimated earnings of £52.5m last year, it's no surprise the singer's in no rush to collect the enormous sum

Whatever you think of Adele's music, there's no denying that the 29 year-old 'Hello' singer is one of the most down-to-earth and likeable people on the planet. Despite her vast wealth and incredible success, she really does just seem to be, well, one of us.

So it's probably no surprise that the star, who first shot to the top of the charts in 2008 with the release of her debut album 19, just turned a reported £1 million ($1.3m) to sing for a private audience of billionaires so that she can - wait for it - tend to her garden instead.

According to Australian singer Guy Sebastien - who's also a judge on the Aussie version of The X Factor - she just wants to continue enjoying life out of the spotlight.

"I was with Adele's agent," Sebastien told the Daily Star, "and two gigs offered her a £1m deal to perform. Her agent said, 'Nah, she's not doing it. She's busy gardening this week.'"

After an epic 121-date world tour that started last year and finished with two sold-out Wembley Stadium concerts in June of this year, Adele announced she was going on hiatus to concentrate on her personal life. She was meant to be playing four gigs at the venue but was struggling with vocal issues and cancelled the other two.

While most of us would probably jump at the chance to earn a swift million, for Adele that's essentially pocket change. This year, she once again retained her crown as Britain's richest celebrity under 30.

Fending off challenges from the likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Ed Sheeran and Emma Watson, Adele staked her claim at the top spot once again with estimated earnings of £52.5m ($69.8m) from touring and album sales last year.

With a fortune that big, you can be sure her garden is also pretty massive, so it's little wonder she wants to spend her time looking after it. Who can blame her?
