Paddy McGuinness has taken a cheeky swipe at his mate Peter Kay after the comedian posted a statement from his Twitter account slating a new documentary.

Shortly before the new Channel 5 documentary Peter Kay: In His Own Words aired, the official Peter Kay Twitter account shared a post which read: "Very flattering of Channel 5 to commission the programme going out tonight, but just to let people know that Peter Kay: In His Own Words has an incredibly misleading title, as it doesn't feature any new interviews with Peter and all the footage is completely historic.

"The title also gives the impression that Peter has been involved in the making of this documentary, which he hasn't. At all."

After the tweet was shared several of Kay's fans responded to point out that this tweet also didn't appear to be in his own words.

And his pal and former co-star McGuinness also joined in, replying: "Never mind that. When did you start speaking in the third person?"

A fan pointed out that it was 'ironic' as the statement also wasn't his own words, while another joked Kay is now 'like The Rock' and refers to himself in the third person.

Last night's two-hour documentary followed the comedian's rise to fame - making his way from small comedy clubs in Bolton and Greater Manchester to becoming one of the biggest comedians on the planet, not to mention creating a number of beloved sitcoms, including Car Share and Phoenix Nights, the latter which he starred in alongside McGuinness.

In a recent interview McGuinness has said he thinks Phoenix Nights could be poised for a return - exciting, eh?

He told The Daily Star: "It was great. There's always talk about doing another one.

"It's just time, it's just getting everyone together. But everyone is up for it."

He added: "We did do it live and that went really well, we sold out five nights playing to 15,000 people a night and that were great."

The show, which also starred Dave Spikey and Neil Fitzmaurice, ran for just two series and ended in 2002. Since then fans have been begging for a new series and now it looks as though we might just be getting one.
