Paris Hilton has shared the truth behind a viral photo of her wearing a top that said 'STOP BEING POOR', revealing that it is fake while telling fans: "Don't believe everything you read."

Hilton, 40, has often been photographed at events or on nights out - especially during her time as one of the world's most famous socialites during the late 1990s and throughout the 2000s.

But one photo of her at the launch of her sister Nicky's clothing line in Las Vegas back in 2005 isn't quite what it seems.

The image that you may have seen bouncing around online shows Hilton with her arms in the air, wearing a white tank top that reads 'STOP BEING POOR', paired with a baby pink skirt.

But in a new TikTok video, Hilton has debunked the theory she was taking a swipe at those less fortunate than her through her attire.

She said: "So there's this photo online of me - I'm sure you've seen it.

"I never wore that shirt. This was completely Photoshopped.

"Everyone thinks this is real, but that's not the truth."

Cutting to another photo, Hilton explained: "This is what it really said: 'STOP BEING DESPERATE'."

She added: "Don't believe everything you read."

According to viral archive KnowYourMeme, the infamous slogan tee has been associated with Hilton since 2013, despite being previously proven to be fake.

"'Stop Being Poor' is an expression often used ironically to mock conservative or libertarian platforms arguments against public-funded healthcare or other social services," the site says.

Hilton's TikTok video has now been viewed 6.4 million times and has 1.6 million likes.

One person commented: "As a poor person I kinda dig the photoshopped one tbh."

Another agreed: "We didn't take it personal tbh. I actually liked the poor one tho lol."

A third joked: "I mean, this shirt changed my life. I was poor, but then I read it, and I instantly became rich; thank you Paris for your generosity."

A fourth added: "Once u pointed it out u can clearly see how photoshopped it is too!!"

Earlier this year, Hilton announced her engagement to businessman Carter Reum, with whom she has been in a relationship since December 2019.

In a recent Instagram post marking their '17 month anniversary', she wrote: "I'm so happy that our souls found each other in this life.

"You lift me up and inspire me in ways you'll never fully know and I'm so thankful.

"When I look back at the memories we've already created together, I get so emotional and excited thinking about the adventures that still await us and the experiences we are destined to enjoy in this life.

"You make me dream bigger than I ever have before. My twin flame. My other half. I love our love!"
