The world is divided into three types of people. Those who remember Sir Patrick Stewart primarily for his role as Captain Picard in Star Trek, those who recognise him as wheelchair-bound paranormal specialist Dr Xavier in X-Men and those who think Marmite is nice.

Fortunately, the first two groups of people can all agree that Sir Patrick Stewart is both a lovely, luvvy man and a national treasure, alongside Trevor McDonald, David Jason, Julie Walters and [insert your own favourite pop star/telly presenter here].

As well as being an accomplished Shakespearean actor, former space captain and the world's most famous Huddersfield Town fan, Stewart clearly likes to spend time picking apples in his garden, while also boasting an acerbic wit when it comes to razzing the younger generation.

In a recent Twitter post, the 77-year-old actor revealed his favourite autumn hobby while poking a little fun at Instagrammers.

Stewart was having a little fun at the expense of those who have spent the last few years mostly posting pictures of their inane lives and eating habits, something I would never, ever do.

Okay, fine, I'm just as bad as the rest of you, but what can I say? The social media world responded in a largely positive manner to Stewart/Picard/Xavier's post, with a series of witty and not-so-witty pun-based responses such as the following, in ascending order of quality:





Devil Hellifer went to the effort of going into the garden for their post. You have to respect that. At the age of 77, Stewart's mind is clearly sharp and his sense of humour not dulling despite being a septuagenarian. It's almost as if he's spent the past 70 years eating an apple a day, with the possible intention of keeping the doctor away.

I am very, very sorry. I have made a terrible mistake.
