Professional Tattoo Artists Give Their Opinion On Celebrity Ink Work

Brutal, yet honest.

Getting a tattoo is a brave decision. Once you've nailed what it is you want to be drawn on your skin, you have to be safe in the knowledge that it's with you for the rest of your life.

There are some brilliant ones out there, and recently thousands of people did the wonderful thing of getting the 'Manchester Bee' tattooed as a sign of respect for the victims of May's terror attack.

At the same time, there are many horrific ones. The incorrectly spelt messages, the tacky 'mum' or 'dad' ones on the side of the neck, or what about the classic 'tramp stamp'?

Many work environments encourage tattoos to be hidden - teachers tend to be in that camp. The only place where it's 'encouraged' is a tattoo parlour, I guess.

Like anyone you see with a tattoo, your eyes instantly judge: does it suit them or not? And shows like Tattoo Fixers have helped to correct hundreds of errors into marvellous works of art.

Celebrities are no different to us when it comes to this. However, with them being in the spotlight, many become the subject of newspaper headlines and social media shares.

Now, these celebrities are under more scrutiny. But not from the general public, this time it is from the pros.

In a recent video by GQ, Chris Nunez and Oliver Peck, hosts of Spike TV's Ink Master, sat down and analysed the tattoos by celebrities including Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Steve-O, and Demi Lovato.

They are brutally honest. The pair described Justin Bieber as being 'littered with garbage' when assessing the tattoos on his arm. Of the Canadian pop star, they said: "In all sense he has the worst taste imaginable, so it does not surprise me at all that every tattoo he has is completely terrible.

"He's known for paying tattoo-ers to come around to his house so he can sit around in his underwear and not have to go to a tattoo shop."

They caught out Adam Levine for his 'mom' ink on his right arm. Peck said: "If his arm is down, and his tattoo is right side up, it's a 'wow' tattoo.

"If you want your tattoo to say 'mom' you have got to get it in the right direction."

Nunez did point out that he has huge respect for tattoos saying 'mom' as 'we wouldn't be here without them'.

The pair were praiseworthy of Angelina Jolie's tiger tattoo. The ink work, done by Buddhist monks, is difficult and painful. The process uses the same tools (previously used on others, which creates its own significant risk), and the intricate patterns are all done with one needle. Nunez adds: "So she suffered for this."

They criticised Cara Delevingne's lion print on her finger. And joked that Mike Tyson, who has a tattoo around his left eye, had reached the 'purest sample of you just don't care anymore'.

Nick Cannon, Jamie Foxx, Chris Brown, Zac Efron, Nicki Minaj and Ed Sheeran (who is pretty handy with a needle himself, as the above image shows) also came under the spotlight during the five-minute video.
