Richard Hammond and his wife Mindy have revealed that they were burgled and possibly gassed while on holiday in the South of France.

The couple had been staying at a villa in St Tropez when the burglars broke in - with Mindy saying that they had been knocked out with gas while they slept so that the robbers could rifle through their belongings.

Speaking to the Express, Mindy explained: "The real horror story for me was that the night before we were late to bed and I heard a door downstairs shut. I thought, 'That's a bit bizarre', and decided I had to check it."

She continued: "I went downstairs and into the hallway. The door into the living room was shut but I heard a male voice behind the door.

"I thought it was another couple staying up and went back to bed. Actually, it was the burglars.

"That just makes my blood run cold. I could have easily walked in and it could have been unpleasant."

It wasn't until the day after the raid, their 15-year-old daughter Willow realised her watch was missing, before others spotted that cash had also been stolen from purses.

"You have got to have some kind of confidence to do that and to be quite satisfied that people aren't going to wake up," Mindy said.

"I'm pretty convinced we must have been gassed or something, because they were in all of the bedrooms - they went where they wanted, into each room, opening and closing the drawers, searching through handbags etc.

"You have got to have some kind of confidence to do that and to be quite satisfied that people aren't going to wake up.

"That morning I slept in until eight. I didn't even wake to Richard's snoring! Nobody woke up."

It turned out that the burglars had robbed the neighbouring property on the same night, but after being caught on camera police arrested them within 48 hours of the break-in, which took place last month.

Thankfully, Mindy added that it didn't spoil the trip 'at all', but Hammond and his family still haven't had the best of luck lately when it comes to being burgled - having also had his Hereford castle robbed earlier this year.

Thieves reportedly broke into the £2 million home in the dead of night, as Hammond was recovering after a crash in a supercar in Switzerland left him injured - once again.

West Mercia Police told the Mirror: "We received reports that a burglary may have been in progress and officers attended. An investigation is ongoing."

Fingers crossed his luck starts improving soon, eh?
