With the Euros getting underway this weekend, it's a good chance to bring up the remarkable moment when former Take That singer Robbie Williams sparked outrage, after flipping off the watching world during the opening ceremony of the World Cup in 2018.

Believe it or not, it was three years ago today that Williams became the talking point of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia before the first ball had even been kicked, thanks to his sweary gesture.

Of course, the incident didn't go unnoticed, with viewers flocking to social media to call out the singer.

One person wrote: "Or how you make yourself look even more of a massive tool than you already are!

"Nice an appropriate gesture for all the kids watching around the world."

While another said: "Didn't see Robbie Williams' opening performance BUT I'm not shocked he thought it was a good idea to throw up a middle finger to a feed 6 million people might be watching.

"That's just sooooooooooooo Robbie."

A third said: "You can tell you are getting old when you don't think that Robbie Williams giving the world the finger is funny... #imfinished"

Although, in fairness, not everyone hated the incident - one fan posted: "England's best performance in a #WorldCup".

Williams explained what prompted his little gesture days later on This Morning.

Speaking to host Phillip Schofield, Williams joked: "At these things, it's really important not to cause an international incident. And do you know what? I managed it."

He then said the gesture was meant to signify 'one minute until kick off'.

"I was under a lot of pressure because there was one minute left and I didn't know how I was going to do it in half a minute," he said.

"So I just did a one-minute countdown."

He added: "I can't trust me. I don't know what I'm going to do at any time. There was no sort of plan. The plan was to sing in key, don't fall over.

"Nothing actually pops into my head. There's a block between me and sense, and then something happens and five minutes later I'm like, 'Did I just... yeah I did, didn't I?!'"

Fair enough.
