A tunnel in San Francisco has officially been named in honour of the late actor and stand up comedian, Robin Williams.

Prior to this, the Robin Williams Tunnel was unofficially known as the Waldo tunnel due to its position on the Waldo Grade, a stretch of highway between the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin City.

The tunnel sports a distinct rainbow border that, according to the SF Chronicle, many thought was a natural reminder of Williams' character Mork from Mork & Mindy, who wore multicoloured suspenders.

The two signs (one at each end) cost $3,000. The money was raised from private donations, Mashable reports.

Now they need to build a statue of the man on top of the hillside.
