Actor Stanley Tucci has revealed he once had cancer but has thankfully recovered, adding that it's unlikely to return.

Tucci, 60, explained that he was diagnosed with cancer three years ago after doctors found a large tumour at the base of his tongue - which they were also unable to operate on.

Speaking to Vera, the in-fight magazine for Virgin Atlantic, Tucci recalled how apprehensive he felt about radiotherapy and chemotherapy, having seen what his his first wife, Kathryn Spath-Tucci, went through before dying of breast cancer in 2009.

He said: "It was too big to operate, so they had to do high-dose radiation and chemo. I'd vowed I'd never do anything like that, because my first wife died of cancer, and to watch her go through those treatments for years was horrible."

Tucci said he worried about the impact his illness might have on his family, continuing: "The kids were great, but it was hard for them. I had a feeding tube for six months. I could barely make it to the twins' high school graduation."

The Devil Wears Prada and Hunger Games star is now a father of five - with three children from his marriage to Kathryn and two younger kids with Felicity Blunt, who he married in 2012.

Thankfully, he said the cancer is unlikely to come back, adding: "[Cancer] makes you more afraid and less afraid at the same time. I feel much older than I did before I was sick. But you still want to get ahead and get things done."

After recently starring in Supernova as a man struggling with early onset dementia, Tucci hosted a six-part food and travel series for CNN called Stanley Tucci: Searching For Italy.

He is now due to release his new food memoir, Taste: My Life Through Food, next month - following the success of previous recipe books The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table.

A synopsis for Tucci's new book reads: "Taste is a reflection on the intersection of food and life, filled with anecdotes about growing up in Westchester, New York, preparing for and filming the foodie films Big Night and Julie & Julia, falling in love over dinner, and teaming up with his wife to create conversation-starting meals for their children.

"Each morsel of this gastronomic journey through good times and bad, five-star meals and burnt dishes, is as heartfelt and delicious as the last."
