Tom Cruise took a brief break from filming Mission: Impossible 7 (no your eyes aren't playing tricks on you - it'll be the seventh instalment) to greet fans and people noticed that he was wearing two face masks.

The 58-year-old actor was on set in Rome, Italy, sporting a blue surgical face covering with a black material mask over the top. Safety first, eh, Tom?

Production crew surrounded Tom as he filmed alongside co-star Hayley Atwell, 38. The pair could be seen filming a scene where they were chained to a steering wheel.

It was in between scenes where Cruise decided to shove his masks on and mingle with co-stars and fans.

This isn't the first time he's been papped filming the upcoming flick. Just last month, he waved at passers-by from atop a moving train.

Footage showed his legs dangling off the side of the speeding train in Norway as he got into character as Ethan Hunt - a role he's been playing since 1996. Great innings to be fair to him.

The film's writer and director, Christopher McQuarrie - who also worked with Cruise on Jack Reacher (2012), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015), and Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018) - shared a visualisation of the train scene on Instagram.

Captioning the image, he said: "Norway's scale and beauty have left an indelible and defining imprint on our film and reminded us that anything is possible."

Work on the film - like everything else - came to a halt earlier this year due to the pandemic, before resuming in September, with Cruise amazing crowds by driving off the 1,246-metre Helsetkopen mountain in Stranda on a motorbike, before parachuting down to safety.

Ole Arnstein Ringdal, one of hundreds who gathered to watch the stunt, told Norwegian news outlet NRK that Cruise rode off the mountain four times.

He added: "After the third jump, he came over and talked to us from a distance of twenty metres. He loves nature here, and is very grateful for the hospitality he has experienced."

Mission: Impossible 7 is due to be released on 19 November 2021, with an eighth instalment set for 4 November 2022.
