Tom Hardy Has Been Awarded A CBE For Services To Drama

He's worked tirelessly over the last two decades and this honour is well deserved

Tom Hardy has risen through the ranks to become one of the world's best and most bankable actors and now he's finally getting the recognition he deserves.

No, it's an early Academy Award, sadly, but it's still a pretty decent nod.

This week he received a CBE Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to drama during the Queen's Birthday Honours.

The recognition acknowledges his meteoric rise to stardom, appearing in Venom, Inception, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight and Bronson.

He studied acting at the Richmond Drama School and the Drama Centre London before landing his first big gig in 2001 as US Army Private John Janovec in the miniseries Band of Brothers. In the same year, he nabbed another war role as Lance Twombly in Black Hawk Down - not the worst start to a career IMO.

But while his career went from strength to strength, that's not to say that he hasn't had his fair share of rough times.

He's had few nights in police cells for disorderly conduct and gun possession, and up until his mid-20s, he battled an addiction to crack cocaine.

Hardy told Yahoo New Zealand in 2015: "I would have sold my mother for a rock of crack. I was a shameful suburban statistic. I was told very clearly, 'You go down that road, Tom, you won't come back. That's it. All you need to know'.

"That message stayed with me clearly for the rest of my days. I am fucking lucky to be here."

He checked himself into rehab in 2003 following a bender where he woke up in a pool of vomit and blood in London's SoHo borough. Hangovers are bad enough but that would be straight up terrifying.

That now seems like a world away from the actor, dog lover and general good bloke is now.

But he wasn't the only one cheering yesterday at the Queen's Birthday Honours.

In the acting world, Kiera Knightly got an OBE in the same field as Hardy while Emma Thompson received a damehood. Rapper Ms Dynamite got an MBE, while the man who has brought us animations like Danger Mouse and Count Duckula, Brian Cosgrove, received an OBE.

Some big sporting names also were rewarded for their services, including boxer Anthony Joshua (OBE), England striker Jermain Defoe (OBE) and former Liverpool player and manager Kenny Dalglish got a knighthood.
