Wasted Ricky Gervais Asked Mel Gibson A Question Too Grim For The Golden Globes

Wasted Ricky Gervais Asked Mel Gibson A Question Too Grim For The Golden Globes

It's way too easy to take shots at Mel.

As people on the internet already know, Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes last night. In his own inimitable offensive joke style, Gervais spent the night delivering a load of offensive jokes. The celebrities in the crowd laughed. The people watching on telly laughed. We laughed.

However, there was one joke that was too offensive for the final cut. At one point in the evening, a noticeably drunk Gervais had to introduce thrilling storyteller and all around terrible person Mel Gibson to the stage.

Gibson, who has a colourful history of getting hammered, being a big racist, and demeaning women, was clearly an easy target for Ricky:

If you can't be bothered to watch, here's quick rundown of the exchange. Ricky introduces Mel thusly: "I blame NBC for this terrible situation. Mel blames we know who Mel blames. Listen, I still feel a bit bad for it. Mels forgotten all about it apparently, thats what drinking does. I want to say something nice about Mel before he comes out. So: Id rather have a drink with him in his hotel room tonight than with Bill Cosby.

That's a date-rape joke. Classic Ricky! Unperturbed, Gibson clapped-back with the quickness: "I love seeing Ricky once every three years because it reminds me to get a colonoscopy."

I don't really follow that one, but whatever. It clearly bothered Gervais, who returned to the stage to ask Mel a very special question: What the fuck does sugar tits even mean?

Now I hear you; 'Hey, this doesn't seem so bad. Sugar tits? What gives?' But you have to consider the context. The question is the same one Gibson posed to the female police officer who pulled him over for drunk driving in 2006 - after he'd spent the first part of the traffic stop blaming 'all of the wars in the world' on Judaism.

As it was, the show's producers decided to mute the whole thing (the live broadcast was on a slight delay).

Oh Ricky. Your most offensive joke came at the expense of Mel Gibson, despite being provided by Mel Gibson.
