New Covid-19-inspired horror film Sick will bring your lockdown memories screaming back

A new horror movie set in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic is set to be released next week.

Sick centres on two pals who decide to go into quarantine together at a secluded lake house, but, of course, with this being a horror movie, it doesn’t end with them baking banana bread and taking part in endless Zoom quizzes. You can see a trailer here:

The movie, which lands on Peacock on the rather ominous date of Friday 13 January, is set in April 2020, just as the world was forced into lockdown as the virus spread across the globe. And as if all that wasn’t bad enough for our protagonists, they’ve also found themselves on the wrong side of a masked maniac hellbent on killing them. All of sudden, my own gripes about not being able to get a pint or a haircut in 2020 don’t seem so bad.

A synopsis for the flick reads: “As the pandemic steadily brings the world to a halt, Parker and her best friend Miri decide to quarantine at the family lake house alone—or so they think.” Cue the creepy music.

The slasher movie comes from the producers of M3GAN, The Purge and Insidious and is co-written by Kevin Williamson, who previously worked on Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, alongside Katelyn Crabb.

It stars Gideon Adlon, Bethlehem Million, Marc Menchaca and Jane Adams.

With news of the movie’s release date spreading to social media, it’s fair to say there’s been a bit of a mixed response.

“Why would I want to relive this as a horror film?” Aptly noted one person.

Another said: “They just make everything into a horror movie.”

While someone else commented: “We do NOT need Covid-19 movies.”

However, others thought it looked right up their street, with one person posting: “I’ve been waiting so long for this to get an actual release date! Very excited to watch this.”

And another slightly more apprehensive horror fan said: “I dunno… a lot going against this one IMO. BH doesn’t have the best record with straight to Peacock releases & a pandemic slasher with mask jokes could be rough (is it too soon?).

“But it’s a new slasher by K. Williamson & I’ve seen pretty good buzz on it so I’ll be watching!”
