Don't Look Up Director Adam McKay Sends Important Warning For Mankind

The movie serves as a cautionary comment on the government and media indifference to the global climate crisis

Adam McKay has shared an important warning for mankind after people have watched Don’t Look Up, saying that without the right steps we are in ‘serious trouble’.

McKay is the director behind the new satirical sci-fi film, which follows two astronomers (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) as they embark on a huge media tour in an attempt to warn the world of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth.

The movie serves as a cautionary comment on the government and media indifference to the global climate crisis, with a tagline from Netflix saying it is ‘based on real events that haven’t happened – yet'.

Since the film was released on Netflix on Christmas Eve, McKay has told viewers that ‘awareness, will and action’ is desperately needed to ‘solve the climate crisis’.

He tweeted: “Remember after watching #DontLookUp that WE HAVE THE SCIENCE TO SOLVE THE CLIMATE CRISIS. Renewables, carbon removal and capture. It just needs to be scaled up & developed.

"We are missing AWARENESS, WILL AND ACTION. Without those three things we are in SERIOUS trouble.”

McKay continued the discussion in the comments, responding to someone who wrote ‘who isn’t aware at this point?’ by saying: “People are aware and polls show they are ‘somewhat concerned’ which means they’ve been under informed.

"Anyone who knows the actual details isn’t ‘somewhat concerned’ they’re freaking the F out.”

Someone else also asked what they could do as an individual to take action, writing: “What’s something, as insignificant as I am, I can do to help and make it better?”

McKay replied: “A good starting point is to feel the magnitude of the climate emergency in your bones. Look Up even though it’s scary.

"That alone will change you & slowly change the people around you. At that point you’ll slowly find your own unique way u can help. It’s different for everyone.”

The film's plot follows astronomer Dr Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his PhD student Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence).

Upon discovering a life-threatening comet that is headed straight for Earth, the pair seek to warn the world of its impending doom through a huge media tour, yet can never seem to be taken seriously.
