A 'Kick-Ass' Reboot Looks Like It Is Going To Happen

Remember Kick Ass?

In an age before superhero movies were all the rage, and years before a certain motor mouthed mercenary took the genre and flipped it upside down there was a film about an ordinary young lad who takes on the role of a superhero and (inevitably) bites off more than he can chew.

Well, years on from the release of Kick-Ass and Kick-Ass 2, in perfect time to cash in on the success of subversive comic book movies such as Deadpool, the director of the original Kick Ass is bringing it back.

Matthew Vaughn, who is known for directing the Kingsman films, Layer Cake, and X-Men: First Class, revealed in an interview with Empire that he wanted to bring the rebooted Kick-Ass film up to date.

Recently, Mark Millar, the creator of the comic book series that the films are derived from, introduced Patience Lee, a black single mother who it is thought will be the focus of any new movie.

Vaughn said: "We're going to reboot Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl.

"Look what Mark Millar is doing with the comic for clues."

Other than that, we don't know a great deal about it. The original featured Aaron Johnson in the title role, Chloe Grace-Moretz as Hit-Girl, and Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy.

Those three intrepid warriors found themselves on the side of good (weirdly enough) in a fight against Frank D'Amico (Mark Strong) and Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

We can't say for certain whether any of those will return, but you'd have to hope that they could draft in some of the old guard to help out for a reboot.

One thing that seems pretty certain is that Thor: Ragnarok's Tessa Thompson could play Patience Lee. She is known to be a fan of the comic books and recently retweeted creator Mark Millar's announcement that he wants her to take the role.

Millar's tweet said: "A lot of fans asking who I'd want as this new Kick-Ass. To be honest, one choice really jumps out and that's @TessaThompson_x."

There you go then.

There could be some boring behind the scenes wrangling ahead though if the whole thing is to get off the ground at all.

Netflix currently has a deal for all content created by Mark Millar, whereas Vaughn owns all of the rights to any Kick-Ass movie deal.

That said, Millar and Vaughn work together for the Kingsman series of films without any problem, so they should be able to thrash something out.

Here's hoping they can make a deal.
