They are keeping him in the series as a tribute.

There has been a huge outpouring of tributes to legendary Batman actor Adam West since his death earlier this month.

Not only have many people flocked to his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but LA's night sky was lit up with the bat-signal a few days after his death.

Despite making a name for himself playing the caped crusader, the actor is just as well known for his role as Quahog mayor Adam West on the hit show Family Guy.

Creator Seth MacFarlane posted this touching tribute after losing one of the show's quirkiest characters.

He said on Twitter: "Family Guy has lost its mayor, and I have lost a friend. Adam West was a joy to work with, and the kind of guy you could always be around.

"His positivity, good nature, and sense of fun were undeniable, and it was always a big jolt of the best kind of energy when he walked in to record the show. He knew comedy, and he knew humanity.

"I am beyond fortunate to have had the privilege of working with him, and he will be profoundly missed by all of us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have given, Mr. Mayor. You're irreplaceable."

But Seth and executive producer Steve Callaghan are planning on going the extra mile to keep West in the series for future episodes.

Callaghan has told Entertainment Weekly: "He's such an integral part of the series that it never even occurred to us to take that out.

"I would almost feel like that was somehow not properly honouring him. I think the proper way to honour him is to keep the character in the show."

Callaghan also mentioned what it was like to work with such an incredible and goofy actor.

He added: "The thing about Adam West is that every time he would come to record, he was just vital and healthy and had so much energy and happiness - no one that you would ever think wouldn't be with you much longer."

West donned the Batman cape and mask in the TV series from 1966 to 1968 as well as in the feature film. He battled to find work after playing the caped crusader until Family Guy premiered in 2000.

He also appeared on The Big Bang Theory last year and gave his voice to a project called Batman vs. Two-Face.

Sadly, Mr West died June 9 at the age of 88 after a short battle with leukaemia.
