But we might be waiting for a while

Unfortunately, all good things have to come to an end.

But luckily for us, the geniuses behind one of biggest TV shows in history are already in the process of creating a new world which we can become obsessed with.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the two men who have brought us Game of Thrones, have announced their next project for HBO, and it sounds incredible. Titled Confederate, the show takes place within an 'alternate timeline', where the South won the US Civil War.

Entertainment Weekly has revealed the synopsis, and it couldn't sound more intense: "Confederate chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution.

"The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone - freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall."

It's conceptually similar to Amazon Prime's recent hit, The Man in the High Castle, which is set in post-World War Two America, but the twist is that the Axis powers actually won. In the show, the US is divided into the Greater Nazi Reich and the Japanese Pacific States.

The first season of the Ridley Scott-produced show has a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes - and given the track record of the team behind it, Confederate has the potential to be just as good.

Benioff and Weiss say in a joint statement: "We have discussed Confederate for years, originally as a concept for a feature film. But our experience on Thrones has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO."

Game of Thrones only has one season left, with the seventh installment having begun this week. But it appears that HBO might not be stepping away from the franchise altogether, with a potential spin-off prequel rumoured.

The network claims it is looking at five potential storylines, but will most likely pick just one. HBO president of programming Casey Bloys told Entertainment Weekly: "The bar set... is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it."

He also mentions that Benioff and Weiss most likely won't be a part of that potential project: "In conversations with them, they feel if their name is on the prequels - even in a passive way - it conveys some sort of expectation or responsibility.

"They want to enjoy the show as fans and don't want to worry about the scripts or production issues. We were hoping to have their names on it out of respect for them, but we understand why they don't want that."

Confederate has no release date, but it's understood that production will kick off once Game of Thrones is completely finished.
