It's been nearly two decades since we last saw adorable Gizmo, and fans are desperate for some gory gremlin action. Well, scriptwriter Chris Columbus is giving everyone what they want; especially after the second instalment contained considerably less gruesomeness.

He says the script for the third Gremlins movie has been finished and it's dark - really dark.

He's told /Film: "I'm really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we'll see. It's always a budgetary conversation; when we're going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie.

"I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we'll see that movie soon."

But he made a shocking confession that Gizmo lovers might find difficult to read.

When the reporter asked whether the small, fluffy critter should be killed off, considering he's the source of all the gremlins, Columbus replied: "Very good observation. That comes up in the movie, certainly. I think it probably is a good idea to be honest with you.

"Too many people are dying."

Well, it's not exactly Gizmo's fault - it's the stupid negligence of humans who expose him to water all the time.

Twenty-seven years have passed since the last entry in the series - 1990's Gremlins 2: The New Batch - but there was also a surprisingly long gap between the first and second movies.

The original was an absolute blockbuster and Warner Bros wanted director Joe Dante to make another immediately, but the world had to wait six years.

While he initially refused to make the sequel, Dante finally agreed after being given full creative control over the flick and triple his previous budget.

Despite massive advancements being made in computer generated images, Columbus intends to stick with the clunky puppets for the third movie, and says he says he only wants CGI to be employed to get rid of the wires attached to the gremlins.

Chris Columbus has a very good CV, serving as a producer, director or writer to some of the biggest films of all time - including Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire and two Harry Potter movies.

We'll have to wait a while before the movie is released, however, as it hasn't even entered production yet.

Maybe the new movie will address the series' great unanswered question - don't feed mogwai after midnight, sure, but when exactly does that reset? Asking for a friend.
