The show will be axed after appearing on our screens for more than a decade. The last episode will air on Wednesday, it has been confirmed.

Some people love it, some absolutely hate it - whichever category you come under, everyone has heard of it.

Everyone can identify with at least something, or someone, that features in Benidorm - surely. Whether it's the sun-worshipping, chain-smoking woman on the mobility scooter (with a hint of orange) or the middle-aged over-enthusiastic swingers.

Maybe it's not all that relatable on second thoughts. But people have gone into a frenzy over the news that it's about to come to an abrupt end after creator, Derren Litten, confirmed that the last episode would air this Wednesday.

Litten announced the news in a Twitter post to his 31k followers, saying: "Crazy to think Wednesday will be the last episode of Benidorm! I created the series over 11 years ago, wrote it, guest starred in it and ended up directing it. It's difficult to think what else there is to do! Thank you for watching! #MuchasGracias"

Wonder how long it took to think of the hashtag?

The cast better book their flights, pack their cases and put their cocktails down, what a hard time they've had.

Maybe it's time to book a getaway break somewhere a little more sophisticated (we're sure it's great before people jump on the defence waggon).

The ITV comedy show first aired in 2007 and has run for the past 11 years. It has been nominated for numerous National Television Awards and has millions of loyal supporters. Many who have been left devastated by the news.

One said: "Thank you for giving us 10 cracking seasons! One of the best programs on the telly box and it will go down in history. I do hope this isn't the end. That show is too good to end. But I know what ever you decide to do will be in the best intrest of the show". (sic)

Another added: "ITV should be phoning Derren up begging him to do more... What other 'good' comedies are there currently? None...as only other current comedy worth a watch is 'Car Share' n that's coming to an end when final 2 episodes are put out....so it is Benidorm all the way!" (sic)

Even Shane Richie, who made guest appearances on the show, got involved by replying to Litten's tweet.

He said: "Sunday is a day of rest I refuse to get angry ....inhale,exhale Sammy , just breath you big lump of beautiful gorgeousness ...F**k it !!!! Nooooooooooo !"

According to The Sun, insiders admitted that bosses thought the series had come to a natural end.

An insider explained to them: "Benidorm has been a huge success for ITV for a decade, but bosses feel it's run its course.

"The ratings have started to drop off and a number of the fan favourites have left, so it just feels as though the time is right to let it go out while it's still on a high.

"It has been ITV's longest running comedy, which is a real achievement."

But fear no more because fans of Derren Litten's work can look forward to a new comedy set in the seaside resort, Scarborough.

A stage version of the show is also in production and some of the best-loved stars will go on a tour in September this year.

We're sorry to break the news but tried to leave it on a high note, if Benidorm is your thing that is.
