Were you one of the millions of people who tuned in to last night's dramatic finale of The Bodyguard? It's been the office water cooler chat of choice for the past few weeks, with everyone absolutely hooked on the story of Home Secretary Julia Montague and her protector, Police Sargeant David Budd.

Without wanting to give too much away (you can read more about the final episode here (be warned, there are spoilers), the series came to the dramatic close that we were all desperate for - leaving us all wanting more, like, immediately.

Well, you'll be happy to hear that the show's creator, Jed Mercurio, has said there could not only be a second series on the way, but also potentially a third and fourth.

Speaking to the Sun, he said that they had been 'very fortunate' with the success of the first season.

"It's probably fair to say we would probably approach any thoughts of a second series with the idea that it would create an opportunity for a third or fourth," he said.

Mercurio explained that they would use the spin-offs to answer all those questions we have after the first season finale, as they had 'decided to leave everything on the field for series one'.

"If the ratings hadn't been quite so high, then possibly everybody involved including the BBC would have said, 'Well that was a nice little series but we're just going to leave it at that and there won't be any more'," he said.

"So you are a hostage to fortune in that sense. And we do feel very privileged and fortunate that there's been such a response that it gives us that opportunity to at least think about doing more."

Mercurio has said in the past that, in creating The Bodyguard, he wanted to give audiences a political thriller that looked into the relationship between politicians and their protectors, shifting focus from the sole viewpoint of politics to something more nuanced.

And it turns out it's a format that audiences absolutely love, judging by the love the show has received.

Speaking to the Metro, he said: "You do the best job you can with the programme and hope when it goes out people will really respond to it. But we've had fantastic support from the BBC."

The only downside? Mercurio's still being tight-lipped about when our next dose of The Bodyguard will be hitting TV screens. Here's hoping it's sooner rather than later...
