Carnage To Feature As Villain In Venom Movie With Tom Hardy

The sadistic, psychopathic super-villain is coming to the big screen

With Sony's Venom movie set for release in 2018, and the notion of anything more than a cameo from Spider-Man seeming extremely unlikely, there is only really one character who would make sense serving as the movie's main antagonist.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carnage will be the villain of the piece in Tom Hardy's upcoming Spidey spin-off.

And what a villain he is.

In the original comics, Carnage was once known as notorious serial killer Cletus Kasady - a real nasty piece of work. He began killing as a child, when he murdered his grandmother by pushing her down the stairs and then attempted to kill his mother by throwing a hairdryer into her bath.

Kasady killed his way through his adolescence, murdering various other children, figures of authority and even burning down the orphanage that he stayed in. His troubled younger years taught him that life was essentially meaningless and caused him to see killing as the ultimate freedom.

As an adult, Kasady was eventually captured and convicted of 11 murders. He was taken to prison and made to share a cell with a bloke called Eddie Brock - who, after merging with a mysterious alien symbiote, had become Spider-Man's arch-enemy, Venom.

When Venom escaped the cell, the symbiote left behind its offspring, which bonded with Kasady, turning into the ultimate supervillain.

Carnage is one of the most horrific baddies ever to have made into the Marvel universe, adding fuel to fans' hope and speculation that Venom will be an R-rated movie. How could it be anything else, given the violent, sadistic nature of its psychotic antagonist?

Fan favourites for the role include the likes of Jim Carrey and Will Poulter. Both great shouts, but we'd particularly love to see Carrey in the hot seat.

Marvel lovers are already getting themselves all excited at the prospect of Tom Hardy as Venom. Even Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland has voiced his support of the British actor.

"It's very exciting," Holland said during a press conference.

"I think Tom Hardy will really play that character with, you know, a lot of energy, a lot of life. It can be a very cool movie.

"It's not something I know about or involved in. As of now, I'm just focusing on Spider-Man and a little bit of Avengers - but I don't know anything about that movie."

And nor does anyone at the moment; there have been very few details leaked to date. What we do know is that Venom and the impending team-up movie Silver and Black will take place within the Spidey universe, as opposed to being completely separate entities.

Producer Amy Pascal told Gizmodo: "Both movies will all take place in the world that we're now creating for Peter Parker. I mean, they'll be adjuncts to it, there may be different locations, but it will still all be in the same world and they will be connected to each other.

Asked if Holland would appear as Spider-Man in one or more of those films, Pascal replied: "There's a chance... there's always a chance."

Either way, we're seriously looking forward to release in 2018.
