Charlie Brooker may have felt 'gobsmacked' when he managed to cast singer Miley Cyrus for his latest season of Black Mirror - though that could be something to do with what he said about her a few years back:
Yup, you may have noticed the unlikely casting of Miley Cyrus in season five of Black Mirror. Sure, the series has managed to attract some huge international names over the years, including the likes of Bryce Dallas Howard and Jon Hamm, but the 26-year-old popstar isn't exactly the first person that springs to mind for a dystopian science fiction about the perils of technology.
And it seems even Brooker didn't really see it coming - having actually slagged her off pretty spectacularly in a past interview.
Back in 2011, the Black Mirror creator laid into Cyrus and her on-screen alter-ego, Hannah Montana, on How TV Ruined Your Life.
Brooker, who's known for his savage diatribes, said: "The pioneering queen of tween role models is Hannah Montana, a wise cracking, warbling smart arse played by Miley Cyrus - who is perhaps the only convincing argument I've ever seen for China's unofficial policy of discarding female infants at birth."
Ooooooooof. Blimey, Brooker.
But he's clearly had a change of heart after managing to rope her into the 'Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too' episode of Black Mirror's fifth season, which sees Cyrus star as a starlet launching her own smart home device bearing her voice.
Also starring Angourie Rice and Madison Davenport, the plot summary explains: "A lonely teenager yearns to connect with her favourite pop star - whose charmed existence isn't quite as rosy it appears..."
Explaining how he managed to get Cyrus to star in the show, Brooker recently told the Metro: "In writing the script, we didn't know, we wouldn't dare think, we'd be able to get Miley Cyrus for the part.
"The script was written and then it was like, 'Well who can play this part of the international pop star? We need someone who's a convincing international pop star but also a great actor?'
"We thought it would be great if we had someone like Miley Cyrus, there's no way we'd get her. But we've got nothing to lose by trying to get the script to her I guess.
"Then we were extremely lucky and pretty gobsmacked that she'd heard of the show, read the script, liked that and got on the Skype call with us."
Sounds like someone's changed their tune...
