'Donnie Darko' Director Hints At New Sequel Set In The Same Universe

Donnie Darko was the film that confused millions of people back in 2001 but has since become the staple DVD in every hipster's bedroom. Lots of people say that it's all about 'teenage angst' and 'isolation' and that the 'unanswered questions are the intention'. Bleurgh, bore off.

In my honest opinion, I didn't fucking get it. Part of me still thinks that everyone who says they 'get it' is a liar and they're all just kidding themselves.

But maybe I'm just a bit thick, who knows. Clearly it struck a chord with people as it made $7.3 million at the box office and God knows how much more on posters for 13-year-old's bedrooms.

Director Richard Kelly has recently hinted that he's looking at another sequel. You may not remember, but there was already a 'Donnie Darko 2' which was called S. Darko and flopped - big time.

Speaking to HMV, Kelly said: "I think there's something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It's big and expensive and I think there's time to get to that.

"I want to make sure we've got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it."

He teased the fact that he's currently working on a lot of different projects, so it may be quite a while before we're all getting really confused by Donnie Darko again: "I've been working on a lot of different projects. The trouble is they're all very ambitious and expensive so they take a lot of time to get in place. We're being very careful to set things up properly, but I'm planning to make up for lost time and make several movies back to back.

"It's nice to be able to bring people back to where we started, but I plan to be back behind a camera in 2017."

It seems that quite a few people are excited at the prospect. Take this guy who's gone super deep...

Woah, dude.
