Adam West, the original TV Batman, passed away over the weekend after a short battle with leukemia.

His family said in a statement: "Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans' lives. He was and always will be our hero."

To a certain generation, he'll be forever synonymous with the Caped Crusader, but younger audiences also know his voice very well - the 88-year-old actor had a recurring role in Family Guy voicing the hapless mayor of Quahog, also named Adam West.

The show's creator, Seth MacFarlane, joined many of his Hollywood companions after the heartbreaking news in posting a lovely tribute to the actor.

He said on Twitter: "Family Guy has lost its mayor, and I have lost a friend. Adam West was a joy to work with, and the kind of guy you could always be around.

"His positivity, good nature, and sense of fun were undeniable, and it was always a big jolt of the best kind of energy when he walked in to record the show. He knew comedy, and he knew humanity.

"I am beyond fortunate to have had the privilege of working with him, and he will be profoundly missed by all of us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have given, Mr. Mayor. You're irreplaceable."

But now MacFarlane is going further, Entertainment Weekly reports: he's planning to demonstrate the show's affection and respect for West by re-airing the episode The Dating Game, which will run a tribute card at the beginning.

The episode features West's character winning a medieval castle in auction.

The city of Los Angeles is also planning a tribute - the Bat-Signal will be flashed over the city as a nod to the 1960s Batman series in which West made his name.

DC Comics revealed the plans for a special way to honour him.

As a fitting tribute for the star, Los Angeles City Hall will flash the Bat-Signal at 9pm (PST). Mayor Eric Garcetti and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck will light up the signal, while fans are asked to dress up to pay their respects.

There's also a mention of guest appearances by 'surprise Bat-guests'.
