Many know Adam West as the caped crusader, but the former superhero gained a new following as Family Guy's Mayor Adam West.

Sadly, Mr West died Friday night at the age of 88 after a short battle with leukaemia.

Family Guy creator and voice actor Seth MacFarlane joined many of his Hollywood companions in posting a lovely tribute to Adam.

He said on Twitter: "Family Guy has lost its mayor, and I have lost a friend. Adam West was a joy to work with, and the kind of guy you could always be around.

"His positivity, good nature, and sense of fun were undeniable, and it was always a big jolt of the best kind of energy when he walked in to record the show. He knew comedy, and he knew humanity.

"I am beyond fortunate to have had the privilege of working with him, and he will be profoundly missed by all of us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have given, Mr. Mayor. You're irreplaceable."

West played Batman in the TV series from 1966 to 1968 as well as in the feature film. He battled to find work after playing the caped crusader until Family Guy premiered in 2000.

He also appeared on The Big Bang Theory last year and gave his voice to a project called Batman vs. Two-Face.

A statement from his children read: "Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans' lives. He was and always will be our hero."

Other actors who have played the Gotham hero have also paid tribute to Adam.

Many social media users are calling for those actors to attend West's funeral as a sign of Batman respect.

RIP Mr West.
