We may have a while to wait yet for the third instalment of The Sinner, but why not get yourself all worked up about it anyway with this tantalisingly brief first look?

As I say, it is quite a brief first look, and we can't really glean much from it really, other than the fact there appears to have been a car crash and who else but Detective Harry Ambrose is on the case.

Though, if you were a dedicated fan of the show, you would know this already.

A synopsis of the third season reads: "The Sinner's third instalment follows Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) as he begins a routine investigation of a tragic car accident on the outskirts of Dorchester, in upstate New York.

"Ambrose uncovers a hidden crime that pulls him into the most dangerous and disturbing case of his career."

Sounds about right.

Detective Ambrose is returning... some time next year.
Netflix/USA Network

Jessica Biel - who was nominated for an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and Critic's Choice Award for her part in season one - is executive producing the series alongside Michelle Purple. Derek Simonds also returns as the showrunner for the latest season

There will be some new blood on the show though, with Matt Bomer, of Will & Grace and Doom Patrol fame, starring alongside Pullman in a new recurring role as a character called Jamie - 'an upstanding Dorchester resident and expectant father who looks to Ambrose for support in the wake of an accident'.

At least two of the episodes will be directed by Adam Bernstein, who is best known for directing episodes of Breaking Bad and Fargo. He should fit in just fine on The Sinner with that kind of experience.

When it debuted in the USA, The Sinner was the best new series on cable television for the whole of 2017. Alongside numerous award nominations, including those for Jessica Biel's performance, it was also certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

For now, we don't know when we can expect the third season to come out - other than on one of the 365 days that happen next year.

In the meantime, you can tide yourself over by watching/rewatching the first two seasons, which are available to stream on Netflix.
