Cillian Murphy has been spotted on the streets of Liverpool as filming for Peaky Blinders gets under way.

The fourth series of the hugely popular show was confirmed last autumn and Cillian was seen in full Thomas Shelby mode running along the streets of Toxteth, which have been completely transformed for filming.

Speaking earlier this year, the star credited good writing for the show's success, as he said: "People in America love it, people in Australia love it, people in Poland love it - it's mad."

Peaky Blinders' creator, Steven Knight, told Deadline: "I'm very, very excited because I'm just completing [the writing of] episode six of series four, which again I think is the best yet.

"And I'm loving it and it's not like work, it's not like a labour, I love doing it, and the boys are coming back and they're loving the scripts, and we start shooting in March."

He also confirmed that Tom Hardy would be reprising his role as gang leader Alfie Solomons, saying: "We couldn't do it without Alfie."

Knight told the BBC: "Tom Hardy was very keen to return. He's an actor in high demand but he made sure he would be available for Peaky Blinders. I know how he feels. This is my hobby - writing and directing films are the day job, but Peaky Blinders is what I do because I love it.

"I have a real loyalty and affection for it; it's my baby and I have wanted to do it for 20 years."

Fans have at least one series after this one to look forward as well as rumours that a Peaky Blinders film could be made.

Series four is expected to air in October this year.
