The first official trailer for Top Gun: Maverick has been released, showing ol' Tom Cruise back in action as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell as he mentors a new generation of US Navy fighter pilots.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film is set 34 years after the original, and sees Cruise reprise his role as cocky ladies' man Maverick.

As the new flight instructor of Top Gun academy, he'll guide Bradley - the son of Maverick's late wingman, Goose - who wants to follow in the footsteps of his old man to become a pilot.

In the 1986 film, Goose died after hitting his head when he and Mav' were forced to eject from their F-14 - a now-iconic scene that left many cinemagoers in absolute bits, marking the end of one of the 80s' finest bromances and inspiring countless fancy dress outfits for decades to come.

But now the time has come to welcome a new era of pilots to warm to, and, judging from the trailer, they won't be having an easy ride to success, much like those before them.

Of course, the passing of three decades has also done absolute wonders for the world of computer graphics, meaning the flight sequences for the sequel look nothing short of EPIC.

Alongside Cruise, the film also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman and Ed Harris.

Filming began back in May 2018, when Cruise shared a photo of himself in character from 'Day 1' of shooting.

Directing the audience to 'Feel the need', the image also referenced the famous line from the first movie: "I feel the need... The need for speed!"

Later in the year, the actor was also spotted on a motorbike recreating a very iconic scene from Top Gun, in which Maverick and his love interest Charlotte 'Charlie' Blackwood (played by Kelly McGillis) go for a ride.

This time, however, Cruise had a new lady riding with him, co-star Jennifer Connelly. Presumably Charlie lost that loving feeling, who knows.

It's good to see that we'll probably have some nods to the classic, but it'll be exciting to see what the new generation brings.

We don't yet have an official release date, but the film is due to hit cinemas at some point in 2020.
