The next three Star Wars movies will be made by the creators of Game of Thrones, it has been confirmed.

During an investors call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said they were taking a three-year break from the saga but David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had agreed to take on the next trilogy, the first of which is set for release in 2022.

He said: "It makes sense to take a hiatus. Three years is the proper amount of time to take a breather and reset but really gear up for the next film's release. We did a deal with Benioff and Weiss, and the next movie will be theirs."

In February this year, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced that the pair would be working on upcoming films.

She said at the time: "David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."

Benioff and Weiss said they couldn't wait for the opportunity, adding: "In the summer of 1977 we travelled to a galaxy far, far away, and we've been dreaming of it ever since. We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete."

But the pair aren't the only creatives linked with the next chapter of the Star Wars story. It was announced a while back that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was also working on a trilogy that will be completely separate from the Skywalker Saga.

However, there is still no release date for Johnson't trio and today's announcement means they will not be made before Benioff and Weiss have released at least the first of theirs.

Rian Johnson will also head up his own separate Star Wars trilogy.

Speaking back in 2017, at the time of The Last Jedi's release, Kennedy praised Johnson. She said: "We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He's a creative force and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career.

"Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

Earlier this year it was reported that Johnson had actually ditched the Star Wars franchise, but he put those rumours to bed and took to Twitter to confirm that he was 'still working on the trilogy'.

Kennedy said: "We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He's a creative force and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career.

Roll on 2022.
