Game Of Thrones David Benioff And D.B. Weiss Will Be 'Very Drunk' When Finale Airs

Not long until the finale of Game of Thrones is here, and we'll (hopefully) have all our questions answered.

While many of us in the UK will be staying up late - or getting up very early - to watch the last episode before work and avoid having it all ruined by spoilers, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have revealed their own plans for when it airs.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Weiss said: "We'll be in an undisclosed location, turning off our phones and opening various bottles.

"At some point, if and when it's safe to come out again, somebody will give us a breakdown of what was out there without us having to actually experience it."

Beinoff added: "I plan to be very drunk and very far from the internet."

Well, they might be best off doing that, given the backlash that season eight has received.

I think it's certainly fair to say that this latest season hasn't been as popular with fans as previous ones - in fact a petition demanding that HBO redo the eighth season with 'competent' writers has almost one million signatures at the time of writing.

Following a number of online leaks, others have branded it the 'worst ending in TV history', if the predictions turn out to be true.

Of course, with the show being as successful and popular as it is, the pressure was always going to be on to make sure it had the perfect ending, something Benioff and Weiss are all too aware of.

Speaking ahead of the final season airing, the pair said they knew it wouldn't be possible to please everyone and that 'a certain number of people will hate' it.

When quizzed about the ending, Weiss said: "We want people to love it. It matters a lot to us. We've spent 11 years doing this. We also know no matter what we do, even if it's the optimal version, that a certain number of people will hate the best of all possible versions.

"There is no version where everybody says, 'I have to admit, I agree with every other person on the planet that this is the perfect way to do this' - that's an impossible reality that doesn't exist. You hope you're doing the best job you can, the version that works better than any other version, but you know somebody is not going to like it"

While Benioff added: "A good story isn't a good story if you have a bad ending. Of course we worry. It's also part of the fun of any show that people love arguing about it."

Well... people are certainly doing that, mate.

The finale airs on HBO in the US on Sunday 19 May on HBO at 9pm Eastern time, UK fans can tune into the simulcast at 2am on Sky Atlantic on Monday morning. Or if you fancy having a proper night's kip you can choose to delete all social media accounts to avoid spoilers and watch it at 9pm.
