'American Horror Story' Creator, Ryan Murphy, Reveals All Series Are Connected

We probably should have guessed

Michael Minay

He's the master of longevity, and one of the great minds behind shows such as Nip/Tuck, Glee and Feud.

Ryan Murphy knows how to play the long game, and you only have to look at American Horror Story to realise that.

Running since 2011, and now entering its seventh season, the anthology series has a new take each time, and follows a set of different characters through their own (horror) story - with some said to be based on true events.

The thriller that is AHS is so gripping that once we've started watching, we can't stop. In fact, scientific research has proven that with us becoming 'hooked' after only four episodes.

And considering that there are no fewer than 10 episodes per season, it's no surprise that people are choosing to stay inside and watch.

Murphy has teased us before and said that all the seasons are linked, yet many of us are still puzzled by the mystery.

However, the co-creator of the show has posted on Instagram, his preferred form of communication, which shared a note from his iPhone.

The note begins with the phrase: 'Nine circles of hell'. This is a reference to Inferno, by 14th century poet Dante Alighieri, which depicts hell as nine concentric circles of torment, located on Earth.

The nine circles are: limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery.

Together they are the realm "of those who have rejected spiritual values by yielding to bestial appetites or violence, or by perverting their human intellect to fraud or malice against their fellowmen."

Next to each of these circles, Murphy has listed which seasons apply to which circle.

Murder House is listed next to limbo, while Hotel is similar to gluttony. Freak Show is linked to greed, while Roanoke reflects anger. Heresy is the focus for Cult (season seven), Ayslum deals with fraud, while Coven is focused on treachery.

The man is a genius.

However, this does leave lust and violence blank, which can only suggest we're due another two series of American Horror Story.

And - conveniently - the show has been booked for at least two more seasons...

On renewing season seven, FX president, John Landgraf, summed up exactly why the show continues to be so popular, commenting: "Each new instalment is a cultural event, hotly anticipated for its theme, imagery, cast and twists."

The new series is set to premiere in September 2017.
