'Aquaman' Star Jason Momoa Was Almost A Villain In The Marvel Universe

Even people who don't really follow comics will be aware that the Marvel and DC superhero universes are entirely separate. Aside from a rarely-discussed, non-canon crossover series in the mid-90s, neither acknowledges the other - they're mutually exclusive continuities and thats just the way fans like it.

While Superman and Batman - both DC characters - could hypothetically get together for a beer, and Ant-Man and Iron Man could attend a football game together, the four of them getting together for a sesh is a huge no-no that would (probably) cause the entire universe to implode.

So it's interesting that in an interview with Entertainment Weekly about his role as DC superhero Aquaman, Jason Momoa divulged the fact that he once met with Marvel Cinematic Universe writers/directors Joe and Anthony Russo about a villain role.

The actor - who also played Khal Drogo in Game Of Thrones, which makes us wonder whether Superman or Iron Man watch the epic fantasy series when they're not saving their respective worlds - revealed he was up for an unspecified villain role, but that he didn't get it.

"I met the Russo brothers, who are amazing," he said. "It was one of the best meetings I've ever had. I was going to do something with them, which unfortunately didn't work out."

He then revealed that he initially got the role of Aquaman after meeting with DC universe writer/director Zack Snyder.

"Really the other one after that was my audition for Batman with Zack," he explained. "And I almost didn't go because I was like, 'This is bullshit. I'm not a white guy. I ain't playing Batman.'

"Even if I do, I don't even want to. It's like an American playing James Bond, you know? I almost didn't do it. I thought for sure I was going to be playing [foul-mouthed comedy antihero] Lobo or something.

Warner Bros.

"The only people I knew they were casting for were Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman - 'Who the hell am I going to play?'

"So in the meeting, I just played it as if Batman had died in an alley and some thug picked up his suit and put it on. I just played him as a smart ass, jaded and sarcastic. And that's when Zack was like, 'I have an idea...'"

The rest, as they say, is history. DC history, obviously. Don't bother asking Deadpool or any of the X-Men who Aquaman is. They'll just give you a very strange look.

Aquaman first appeared in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017's Justice League, and is now getting his own feature-length film, which is currently scheduled for release on 18 December 2018.
