Anticipation built last year as an informant from Rockstar, who accurately leaked the last two GTA V online updates, revealed some exciting news about Red Dead Redemption 2.

The trailer, which gave nothing away, left rumours to circulate as to whether the new game will be a prequel to the original.

A statement that came with the release said: "Red Dead Redemption 2 is an epic tale of life in America's unforgiving heartland. The game's vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience."

The source posted: "It'll be just like Redemption. Single player story, open world, stranger events, gang hideouts and all that shit."

He added: "Three playable characters of John's former gang, and John isn't one" - not good news to fans of the original.

But, with that interesting twist, comes a sense of anticipation. To see if it's better or worse. Well now, a launch date has been given.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is now set to launch in Spring 2018 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A couple of months ago it was due for release later in the year.

In a statement online, its creators, Rockstar Games, said: "The game will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans.

"We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready. We are really excited to bring you more details about the game this summer."

They then released some screenshots to go with their news - to soften the blow you'd imagine. But it looks like fans are happy to wait.

The first part to this duo, Red Dead Redemption, received huge acclaim when it was released in 2010 - receiving a score of 95 out of 100, and scooped several 'Game Of The Year' awards.

As of February 2017, the game had sold over 15 million copies.

For fans, the countdown can begin, RDR 2 is approximately one year away.
