It looks as though Miley Cyrus has confirmed a role in the forthcoming fifth season of Black Mirror, which drops on 28 December - big, if true, if not a little surprising.

The rumour that she might be appearing in Charlie Brooker's popular dystopian sci-fi series first cropped up on South African news website IOL, when it ran a story that claimed a local hotel manager in Capetown had said Miley Cyrus had stayed at the site while shooting the show.

Cyrus' sister Brandi then made the rumour go viral during the December 11 edition of her podcast Your Favorite Thing - because what are sisters for, if not stirring shit?

Miley's remained fairly schtum about the whole thing, until she spoke to Howard Stern, that is, when she decided it would be a good idea to blab about having a role in an upcoming episode.

"If you guess it, then I will shake my head 'yes'," Miley said when Howard asked about the rumors.

When Howard tried to press Miley to commit a bit more with what she was implying, she said she wasn't allowed to mention Black Mirror by name because she's not allowed to speak about it further. Bet ol' Brooker's thrilled.

Neither Cyrus' representatives nor Netflix has confirmed the casting to Billboard.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise, as it wasn't long ago that Miley was claiming she wasn't up for returning to the screen.

Speaking to Wonderland magazine, she said: "My attention span doesn't love the idea of focusing and being on one project for so many months, especially being a character and not getting to be myself for that amount of time.

"I get really deep into the characters I play, just like I do with music. So then it becomes hard for me to relate - even to my family and friends - I'm so deep into that character.

"So for right now, I am so content with where I am, being someone else doesn't sound that fun to me."

Mind you, let's not forget that acting is where she first made her name - long before the days of writhing around naked on a wrecking ball.

Along with several movie roles, she also starred as the titular character on Disney's Hannah Montana, though more recently she's been helping as a coach on TV series The Voice.
